My Review on Modern Times

Having been my first silent, black and white movie, Modern Times did not disappoint me. I always had this idea that these movies were boring and never something that I would enjoy watching, yet I did. At first it was a little difficult for me to understand what was going on in the movie, for I am used to the voices being what the movie make sense to me. As the movie went on, I started to understand the story and got the hang of reading the actors' lips if I needed to. Because the movie was silent, I noticed myself paying more attention to the little details in the scenes. The silence also made it impossible for me to get distracted because I knew that if I did, I would not understand what was going on in the movie. My favorite part of the movie was the end where Charlie Chaplin’s character tells the gamin to Smile. The 1930’s were a time full of hardships not only for Americans but for people all over the world. With the Great Depression in place, many found themselves in the same situations that the gamin and Charlie Chaplin did. This last word tried to assure them that everything would be fine and it was important for them to smile and stay positive. Similarly, this year being my last one in high school, may be filled with many hardships. However, by smiling I can maintain a positive attitude and accomplish what I have to.
